CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PARISH

The parish of the Holy Rosary is joined to the parish of St. Martin de Pores, including the entire Gonzales area, Jerningham Avenue, and Abercromby Street from Memorial Park to Duke Street.

This pastoral area encompasses some 3,289 households, with a population of 11,629 persons, with 40% living below the poverty line. In the parish there are four steel orchestras, over 14 groups committed to social development, all of the major banks and many of the country’s leading businesses.

The parish is also in the center of a high crime district. According to Central Statistical Office reports in 1999, Port-of-Spain accounted for over 16% of all the reported crime in Trinidad and Tobago. In recent times this figure has escalated.
