ARCHITECTURE

This old and beautiful church which has been a part of our religious and social heritage is now in urgent need of restoration.

The design of the church is in the Gothic revival style. Its vaulted ceilings in the main aisle and the lower ceilings of the side aisles form the shape of a cross. The stained glass lancet windows came from Toulouse, France, made by a company that is still in the business today.

The stone blocks for the exterior of the building came are blue limestone from the Laventille quarries.

The highly respected architect John Newel Lewis wrote about Rosary Church in his book “Ajoupa” (1983):

“The Rosary Church is competent, but ponderous. It is a Pugin-inspired replica—imposing, humourless, ecclesiological and complete, and on its own terms without fault ... It must be described as magnificent, much more dignified than the Cathedrals, serious, commanding and well built. It is hemmed in and difficult to see ... It is a shame that we cannot move the Rosary Church to Independence Square and the Cathedral to Park Street where both would look better than they do now.”
